I am absolutely fascinated by amish culture. I have no interest in becoming amish (as is nearly impossible to do) but I am so interested in how they run their lives, families, religion, and careers. They are very hardworking people, who thrive on being the same. They believe that everyone is the same. They believe that one needs to be an adult and have the opportunity to experience other lifestyles before one can be baptized into the amish lifestyle. The period of time after one has finished school (8th grade) and before one gets married or between the ages of 16-20 (approx.) is called the "Rumspringa" and at this time it is believed that one is an adult, and is able to make their own decisions about how to conduct their lives, and since they are not baptized yet they may venture into experiencing different lifestyles.
I think that though they may seem very strict and reclusive they are one of the most honest religions. Understanding that baptism should be an adults choice and not a baby photo op. is very mature, and leaps and bounds beyond other faiths.
